Students who have finished fourth, fifth or sixth grades can spend a week this summer exploring a variety of careers with lots of fun, hands-on activities when Flint Hills Technical College offers the second annual Kid’s College from July 7 to 11 and July 14 to 18.
Each week-long, half-day session includes five different classes. Children can choose to attend either week and attend in the morning or the afternoon. Morning sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions run from 1 to 4 p.m. Each session is limited to 20 children and costs $75 per student. Each week’s schedule includes:
- Monday — Watch Your Mouth! with Monica Graves, FHTC dental assisting instructor. Students get to “play” dental assistant for a day and participate in the examination process! They will pour dental molds to take home, make a temporary crown and see your mouth through a dental Ora-Vision Monitor.
- Tuesday — Chocolate Classroom with Kim Redeker, Sweet Granada. This hands-on chocolate experience will include the history of chocolate, making dipped-chocolate novelties and the math and science of baking. Students will hardly notice that they’re learning weights and measures, food safety, world history and more because it’s all packaged in a fun, interactive chocolate classroom.
- Wednesday — Lights, Camera, Action! with Lynn Cress, FHTC network and multimedia instructor. Students create their own movies with friends in a world that they create using 3-D animation! Students will be able to take their movies home to share with family and friends.
- Thursday — Art Smart with Brenda Hollenbeck, Emporia Arts Council. Let creativity go wild with all hands-on art activities. Students will love taking part in creating a bunch of arts and crafts. A variety of techniques will be used to create several finished projects to show family and friends.
- Friday — Organic Farmer with John Crisp, Shepherd’s Valley Farm. Travel to Shepherd’s Valley farm outside of Americus to learn about raising fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, chickens, turkeys and lambs. Students will get to harvest blackberries, gather eggs, pet sheep, go on a tour of a greenhouse, watch honeybees work and have fun at the campground along the creek, including climbing the Swiss Family Robinson tree house!
