Flint Hills Technical College Briefs

The Flint Hills Technical College Foundation received a check for $50,000 from the Jones Trust to provide funds for the Dental Hygiene program. The grant funds will be used to purchase furniture and equipment for the dental hygiene lab including rolling carts, a portable dental X-ray unit, operator stools, a digital X-ray sensor, digital X-ray software, an anesthesia model, dental hygiene models and other items.

Flint Hills Technical College spring commencement exercises will be 2 p.m. May 17 at William Lindsay White Auditorium. More than 200 students will be graduating with a high school diploma, technical certificate or associate of applied science degree. Sally Anderson, retiring Northern Heights High School counselor, will be the commencement speaker.

Students in the Flint Hills Technical College hospitality/culinary arts program assisted with the Kansas Corps Pilot Project on April 19 in Melvern. The students spent two days preparing a lunch of pulled-pork sandwiches, chips, apples, cookies and lemonade to serve to all of the project volunteers. The students enjoyed their time volunteering and meeting students from other colleges. Kansas Corp is a pool of student volunteers from Kansas colleges and universities who serve the public services needs of the state of Kansas. Students working in Melvern were helping build hiking and biking trails.

Jarred Weems, Peabody, and Chris Smith, Goodland, hospitality/culinary arts students, were recognized in the Skills USA State Awards Ceremony on April 18 in Wichita for their success at the state Skills USA post-secondary culinary arts competition held in early April. Weems placed first in the State and Smith placed second. Students were graded on preparation of a chicken entrée, knife skills, and sanitation. As the first place winner, Weems will compete against first place winners from 50 states at the National Skills Convention in Kansas City, Mo., in June.
