The Lowther Intermediate schools and William Allen White each will have a new principal for the coming school year.
Jessica Griffin, an instructional coach at Logan Avenue Elementary, will replace Nita McLean as principal at Lowther South Intermediate School. McLean has resigned.
Wade Redeker, currently a science teacher at Emporia Middle School, will assume principal’s duties at Lowther North. LSIS Principal Brian Jordan has been chosen for a district-level position in the Teaching and Learning Department.
Alberto Carrillo of Garden City will replace James Baker as principal at William Allen White elementary school.
Griffin has taught in Emporia schools for eight years and holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education, a master’s degree in educational administration from Emporia State University, and has an endorsement in English as a Second Language.
She has served as lead teacher for second-grade mathematics and has been a member of the Instructional Council, the Professional Development Council and served as literacy chairman of the North Central Association.
Redeker, who has taught for 12 years, has worked at Emporia Middle School for the past six years.
Redeker holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in educational administration from ESU.
He has served as department chairman, Professional Learning Community lead teacher, Student Improvement Team leader, and as a mentor teacher. He has participated in science curriculum review, design, textbook selection and assessment development.
Carrillo has been ESOL Resource and Family Liaison, a district-level position, for two years in the Garden City school district. He also taught first grade for three years and was co-chairman of the dual language committee in the Garden City district.

I am curious to know how the new principals are selected. I personally know of several applicants who are more than qualified who weren't even given an interview. The rumor mill, infamous in Emporia, tells it this way: District gurus hand-pick and nurture future administrators who "fit in" or are "team players" early on. This makes for a system of administrators who are all on the same page and who won't make waves. I would like for someone to explore the application, screening process. The school board doesn't have any input apparently, am I right?

These people are highly qualified. I am well-acquainted with one of them and know him to be not only qualified, but he has worked very hard and has always been enthusiastic about education. He is a principled individual and I don't see him rolling over for any "guru." That rumor mill is exactly that -- rumors. Ever play the game of gossip?

As a parent of a child who has had Mr. Redeker as a teacher and a coach, and who has a student who will be in the sixth grade next year- I am thrilled!! The selection process is right on target. Great Job BOE.

I have known Jessica since she was in the 7th grade, and she is a very caring person who will do wonderful things with the position.
Jessica is a graduate of Chase County HS, as is Aron Dody, who just took a position as principal of Americus Elementary. They both have solid roots and morals that will do them well as educational leaders.
