Students in Emporia’s fifth and sixth grades have wrapped up a three-session workshop series that has showed them the kinds of careers they can look forward to in the mathematics and science-related fields.
The program, “ Sî, Se Puede” (Yes, You Can) concluded with a banquet Saturday, April 25 in Emporia State University’s Memorial Union. Dr. Michael R. Lane, ESU president, and Dr. John Heim, USD 253 superintendent, spoke at the concluding ceremony.
“We want to increase the level of interest that Hispanic students have in science and mathematics, and make them aware of the career opportunities they’ll have in those fields,” said Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Yanik, ESU professor of mathematics, and one of the organizers of the three-session seminar.
Students from Emporia’s Lowther North and South Intermediate Schools took part in the program, including Jesus Abundiz, Guadalupe Alaniz, Evelyn Ayala, Eunise Bedolla, Patricia DelAlba, Ramon Estrada, Vanessa Garcia, Jhon Huechaca, Milagros Ibarra, Rolando Jerez, Jr., Hilda Leal, Maria Lopez, Fernando Negrete, David Ocampo, Jennifer Ramirez, Kimberly Raygoza, Keith Renteria, Zulema Renteria, Uzziel Salinas, Marian Trujillo, Yuliana Viveros, and Mayra Zepeda.
The program will resume in the fall. For more information about the Sî, Se Puede workshops, contact ESU’s Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics at 620-341-5281.
