With the one-year anniversary of the tornado that destroyed Greensburg, a group of Emporia-area residents are going to help with the continuing process of rebuilding the town.
Lyon County Commission vice-chairman Marshall Miller said about nine people, including himself, would leave Saturday and to work in Greensburg Monday through Friday of next week. This will be Miller’s third trip to Greensburg. He went a week after the tornado last year and then in July of 2007. Miller said the local people going were from First United Methodist Church and were going out with the West Conference of the United Methodist Church.
The group will set up camp in Haviland, Miller said. They are taking tools and a trailer and will help out where assigned.
Miller said Greensburg is buzzing with activity right now.
“The water tower is up and has their name on it,” he said.
He said one of the projects is the “547 Building,” named after the date the tornado went through (May, 4, 2007).
“It’s interesting,” he said. “They started a playground on Monday and expect to have it done by Friday.”
