Emporia’s Chaze Sanchez defeated Kyle Johnson of Columbus in the title bout of the 14-and-under 130-pound weight class Sunday at the Kids State wrestling tournament in Topeka to complete his 4-0 day and win the championship.
Sanchez, a freshman at Emporia High, got a first-period takedown over Johnson that proved to be the difference in the match.
Sanchez won the only title for the Emporia Kids Wrestling Club, though seven other wrestlers earned places out of the 18 competitors the EKWC took to the meet.
Jared Dakin finished his day with a 4-1 record to place third in the 16-and-under 120-pound weight class, winning by rule over Salina’s Steven Plott in the third-place match.
Two other Emporia wrestlers advanced to the third-place match of their respective classes but could not pull out victories, as Bryce Dakin (14, 90 pounds) and Zeb Peak (16, 145 pounds) each placed fourth.
Justin Rose took a 5-3 decision over Manhattan’s Lucas Wagner to place fifth in the 16-and-under 130 pounds weight class, while Braxton Marstall (12, 96 pounds), Sal Tovar (16, 135 pounds) and Logan Gaskill (16, 155 pounds) each came away with sixth-place finishes.
