The Emporia High softball team suffered a pair of run-ruled losses to open its season, falling twice by scores of 15-0 to Washburn Rural on Friday at Whittier Park.
Emporia, which managed just one total hit on the day, lost in three innings in Game One before stumbling in six innings in Game Two.
“We really didn’t swing the bats very well at all,” EHS coach Ray Owens said. “We have a problem getting the girls to swing the bats right now. They’re just going to have to learn.
“They’re used to waiting for that perfect pitch to come along in practice. Well, when you have an umpire back there, that beautiful pitch doesn’t come very often.”
Rural jumped all over the Lady Spartans in the first game, scoring one run in the first inning before erupting for 13 in the second frame. The Junior Blues ended the game in the next inning by getting one run home.
In Game One, Hannah Lynch recorded the only hit of the day for EHS. Washburn Rural had 12 hits in the first game.
In Game Two, while the game lasted longer, the outcome was the same, as Rural scored in every inning to take the 15-0 victory after the sixth inning.
Rural held Emporia hitless in the second game while the Junior Blues knocked out another 19 hits.
Emporia (0-2) is back in action next Friday with a doubleheader at Topeka West.
