Red Cross volunteers
The American Red Cross will offer information on becoming a volunteer at a meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Emporia Public Library.
Red Cross Director of Services Liliana Heredia-Taylor will speak about emergency preparedness, the services provided by the Red Cross and how to receive first aid and CPR training. Although she will be providing overall volunteer information, Heredia-Taylor said she is in great need of disaster services volunteers who can help respond to local emergencies.
For more information, contact Heredia-Taylor at 342-4211.
Help for workers
The city’s dislocated workers resource center for those affected by the Tyson Fresh Meats layoffs will open at the Mary Herbert Learning Center, 1700 W. Fourth Ave., beginning Wednesday, City Manager Matt Zimmerman said in a news release.
The center will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include services such as a food pantry, health service scheduling, utility payment arrangements, job search help and credit counseling. Agencies staffing the center will include the Salvation Army, Kansas Works, Social and Rehabilitation Services and Flint Hills Community Health Center.
Because of the large number of people expected to use the center, the city asks that affected workers with last names starting with A-M use the center on Wednesdays. Workers with last names starting with N-Z are asked to use the center on Mondays. For questions, call the city manager’s office at 343-4251.
