The Emporia High girls swimming and diving team got four first-place finishes and another four top-five places to finish third at the Topeka High Invitational on Thursday.
Hilary Larson had a hand in three of the four first-place showings, as she won two individual events and helped the 200 freestyle relay team to the title as well.
Emporia High finished with 320 points, just 11 points back of runner-up Derby (331), while Washburn Rural took the team title with 342 points.
“We swam well for them having a week off (because of spring break),” EHS coach Bob Yevak said. “We had a lot of best times.”
Larson’s two victories came in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Larson picked up State consideration times in both events, finishing the 200 in a time of 2 minutes, 8.46 seconds and the 100 in a time of 59.44 seconds.
Larson also swam the lead leg of the 200 free relay squad that finished first in a State-consideration time of 1:49.79. Larson teamed with Whitney Starr, Kathryn Scherich and Caitlin McGuire for the victory.
Emporia’s other first-place finish came in the diving competition, as Carissa Schmitz beat out 11 other divers to take first with a score of 163.35. Aubrey Armitage came in fourth in the diving competition with a score of 153.55.
Starr turned in a pair of individual top-five finishes, coming in third in the 100 butterfly (1:07.99) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:31.16).
The 400 freestyle relay team of Larson, Starr, Scherich and McGuire also reached State consideration time, finishing second in a time of 4:04.63.
Emporia High will be back in action next Tuesday and Thursday when it plays host to the Emporia Invitational. The diving competition will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday and the swimming events will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday.
