Kindergarten orientation scheduled

Originally published 12:49 p.m., March 28, 2008
Updated 07:01 p.m., March 30, 2008

Parents and prospective kindergarten students are asked to attend one of the orientations planned this month in Emporia elementary schools.

Children who will be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2008, are eligible to attend kindergarten in 2008-2009. All Emporia schools offer full-day kindergarten, but parents have the option to enroll their children for only a half day.

Kindergarten orientation will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 16, and 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Logan Avenue, Riverside, Timmerman, Village, Walnut and William Allen White schools. Interpreters will be available for parents who speak Spanish.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend orientation sessions to meet staff members, receive information about the enrollment process, and learn about services available to students. Parents also will learn what they can do now to prepare their children for the start of school. The children will spend time in the classroom with the teachers.

Formal enrollment will be held in July and the school year will begin Aug. 14.

School addresses and telephone numbers are:

- Logan Avenue, 521 S. East St., 341-2264

- Riverside, 327 S. West St., 341-2276

- Timmerman, 2901 Timmerman Drive, 341-2270

- Village, 2302 W. 15th Ave., 341-2282

- Walnut, 801 Grove Ave., 341-2288

- William Allen White, 902 Exchange St., 341-2294.

Shouldn't we be concerned about children turning 5 before August 31, 2008 for the 2008-2009 school year?

Am I missing something?

Yes, the date was a typo. Students should be 5 by Aug. 31, 2008. It's been changed.

Gwen:

The error was in the school year. Article should read, for the 2008-2009 NOT 2007-2008 school year. That means they are registering for next year.
