The Emporia High girls soccer team dropped its first game of the season Thursday, losing 3-0 to Maize in the semifinals of the Blue Bracket of the Titan Classic in Wichita.
“They (Maize) were just a pretty darn good team,” EHS coach John Decker said. “They kind of took it to us. They were physical, they were fast and they finished. They have great skills.”
Maize scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. A defensive switch by the Lady Spartans (1-1) at the break managed to somewhat slow down the Maize attack, but Maize got in one more goal in the second half.
Emporia, meanwhile, couldn’t get anything going offensively when it had possession of the ball.
“They were more physical than us and knocked us off the ball a lot,” Decker said.
“It’s weird to say it, but I thought we played better tonight than we did on Monday even though we lost.”
Emporia will play in the third-place game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
