Shooting contest
Hartford High School cheerleaders will benefit from a basketball shooting contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at North Country Mart, 1020 Merchant St. Organizers said contestants can shoot three shots for $1. Each successful shot equals an entry into a drawing for four basketball goals.
The cheerleaders plan to use the money raised to attend camp.
Republican delegates
The First Congressional District Republican committee will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall, 2106 Vine St., in Hays to elect three delegates and three alternate delegates from the district to the Republican National Convention to be held in September 2008 at St. Paul, Minn. Congressman Jerry Moran is expected to attend to address the committee during lunch. The meal charge is $12 each. Those planning to attend are to call Randy Duncan at (785) 825-8859 for reservations.
Contract negotiations
USD 252 will have the first negotiation meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Board of Education Room at the District Office in Hartford. Information: (620) 392-5510.
Auditions
Auditions are Monday for this year’s Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “The Little Mermaid.” All students from kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to audition from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Emporia High School, 3302 W. 18th Ave.
Organizers ask that those auditioning arrive early to register. Some who are cast will be asked to stay for a rehearsal from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Rehearsals will be every day from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the high school. The performances will be at 7 p.m. April 4 and 2 p.m. April 5.

Scholarship contest
Annelise Masters, a student at Burlington High School, is the only remaining Kansan in an online voting contest for a $20,000 scholarship. According to the news release, the Zinch.com scholarship sponsor selected 200 students from 150,000 registered students to compete in a March Madness tournament-style competition. Masters progressed to the Sweet Sixteen bracket after winning weekly voting rounds that began March 3. To vote for Masters, enter www.zinch.com/west and click on Annelise Masters. Below her profile is a Vote button to click to cast a vote. The Sweet Sixteen round of voting closes at 10 a.m. April 2. Only one vote per IP address is allowed each week. Students voting who are registered through Zinch earn two votes a week. The tournament concludes April 23. Masters is the daughter of Brian and Luella Masters of Burlington.
Deadline extended
The one month extension of the 2002 Farm Bill allows the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to offer additional funds to landowners interested in the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP). The NRCS accepts applications on a continuous basis, said the news release. Applications received now through Tuesday will be considered for funding. Those interested can apply at the local NRCS office or conservation district office or see offices.usda.gov. Job fair
There will be a Job Fair from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Independence Civic Center at Penn and Locust Street in Independence, Kan. According to the news release, “there are excellent jobs available in Montgomery County” and a dozen leading local employers “will be on hand to fill real jobs.” For more information, call (620) 331-3830.
Piano concert
Jackson Berkey, co-founder of the musical group Mannheim Steamroller, will perform a concert of his original piano compositions at 7:30 p.m. April 4. Admission for the concert in Heath Recital Hall costs $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. After the program, Berkey will be available for autographs. Before the concert, Berkey is leadeing a master class for ESU piano program students.
On April 5, Berkey and his wife, Almeda, will be judges in the annual Agnes Reichardt Arnett Piano Festival.
