It’s illegal to cut through parking lots

Q How can police give tickets to people who drive through Wal-Mart parking lot from Industrial Road to reach West 24th Avenue?

A That particular avoidance of traffic controls (and the accompanying traffic) has been a source of complaints and tickets for the past several weeks.

The reason police have written tickets in that area, and others, is because they have a legal right and responsibility to do it.

“It is unlawful to drive through private property entrances and exits to avoid a traffic control device or take a shortcut from one street to another,” said Officer Larry Clay.

The law, considered a moving violation, applies to driving through parking lots and convenience store, business, or private driveways, he said.

“We have had complaints of vehicles driving through the Wal-Mart parking lot when school lets out, which is what brought this to our attention,” Clay said.

If convicted, the citation carries a $35 fine plus $55 in court costs.

Any person who actually felt the need to ask that question has no business operating a motor vehicle or possessing a driver's license! Perhaps DMV should require a minimum IQ requirement.

Yeah, you are probably right. But with the construction on Graphics Arts road, the intersection of 24th and Industrial is a nightmare. I have made that same shortcut, I guess I was just lucky not to get caught. Having said that though, I knew everytime I cut through there that it was illegal.

FYI, most of the people cutting threw the parking lots are high school students trying to get to school, which is their job. Most of the time, if the students didn't cut threw the parking lots they would be late to class. I once sat at the same stop light, on Industrial, for three signal changes to wait and be able to turn. It is stupid to wait that long to be able to turn. Maybe if the city could make it so more cars could turn at one signal we wouldn't all have to make little short cuts.

Yes, this is the law as we should all be educated on it.

It is unlawful to drive through private property entrances and exits to avoid a traffic control device or take a shortcut from one street to another,” said Officer Larry Clay.

Did you know there is a stop sign on the other side of the Walmart location? (No devices avoided) You still have to wait for on going traffic.
Shortcut it is not! The distance from Industrial Road to 24th street is equivalent to the distance of driving through Wal Mart's back parking lot entrance. 0.2 miles in distance.

It is the duty of the officer to enforce this law.
Make sure that you are designating officers to all locations. This means the entrance to Wal-Mart into McDonalds and leading out.
This too is illegally driving through a parking lot and has been used continuously.

We have had complaints of vehicles driving through the Wal-Mart parking lot when school lets out, which is what brought this to our attention,” Clay said.

Really? Is there someone patroling the area to witness where these vehicles are actually heading? You mean some employee or manager has time to be on the lookout during peak business hours and witness a car cut through their parking lot without patronizing their business?
Or perhaps the complaints are at 7:45 in the morning. The only business open is Wal Mart. And the tire shop is still closed! This is where this route is most travelled. Now who's doing all the complaining? Must be the ghost patroling in the wee mornings angered by the vehicles inconsiderably driving through all that parking space.
Next time I will remember to buy a soda from the machine outside and then pass through the back entrace.

Driving is not a right, do it right or don't do it. The police should be enforcing all public safety laws, including people not coming to a complete and total stop at red lights and stop signs, and zipping through parking lights because they didn't plan ahead and consider themselves to be too important to wait with the peasants.

Good point on the stop sign behind Wal-Mart. Pulling someone over for driving through there seems awfully lame. What if I have every intention of stopping at Wal Mart, but when I get in the lot I remember a coupon or something at home, so I cut through the back way without stopping - will I get a ticket for that? I've never been around Wal-Mart when school lets out, but I'm sure it's a cluster all around there. If someone is driving poorly and endangering others, yes pull them over - if it's not a big deal, who cares? Why not spend your time busting the people who run lights and stop signs or drive drunk? Or how about those drivers who put other peoples lives in danger because they drive so dang slow. If the speed limit is 30, why on earth do people slow down to 20-25?! I would like to start ticketing for too slow of drivers as well!
