Kirby Duncan II, 35, has been identified by Emporia Police as the driver of a van that led officers on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning from Graphic Arts Road through west Emporia until police called off the chase as it approached the downtown area.
Duncan allegedly continued eastbound at a high rate of speed and drove his vehicle into the rear of another vehicle near Sixth Avenue and Exchange Street.
According to a news release from Deputy Chief Mike F. Williams, police received a 911 call at 2:09 a.m. The caller reported that some bags had been stolen from an employee of Club Orleans, 900 Graphic Arts Road, and that the suspect had left the club in a van bearing Kansas license plate XBP 754.
Williams said that an officer was assigned to the case, but before the officer could reach Club Orleans, Officer Kevin Shireman located the suspect’s vehicle on U.S. Highway 50 eastbound from Graphic Arts Road.
“Officer Shireman attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and the suspect vehicle then attempted to flee and elude while increasing speed,” Williams said.
“After reaching the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Prairie the van further increased its speed and a pursuit followed with officers reaching speeds of approximately 80 miles an hour.”
Officers discontinued the pursuit as the van approached the downtown area. The driver of the van, however, continued east for several blocks at a high rate of speed until it struck the rear end of another eastbound vehicle near Sixth Avenue and Exchange Street.
The Emporia/Lyon County Ambulance Service report showed that emergency medical technicians treated three patients, and took two of them — including Duncan — to Newman Regional Health.
“He’s in the hospital as far as I know,” Williams said this morning.
Charges have not yet been filed, he said.
