The Emporia High girls soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over Wichita East in the first round of the Blue Bracket of the Titan Classic in Wichita.
Sophomore Chloe Blake produced Emporia’s lone score of the day late in the second half to give Emporia the victory.
Junior Rachelle VanGundy had the ball in front of Wichita East’s goalie box and was facing away from the net when she kicked the ball back over her head and up into the air.
When the ball came back down, Blake had gotten in between her defender and the goal, and she knocked a header into the net over the arms of the East goalie to give EHS a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute.
Emporia held on for the shutout victory from there.
“We were able to get the job done,” EHS coach John Decker said. “We had a lot of near misses at the goal, and we need to find a way to put the ball in the net better, but I saw a lot of stuff we can work on, and a win is a win.”
Emporia advances to play Maize at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the Titan Classic.
