Money available for weatherization grants

Some area residents will be eligible to apply for a share in a $2,518,837 home-weatherization grant that has been awarded to Kansas by the U.S. Department of Energy. The money is a continuation of federal support for the Weatherization Assistance Program of the Kansas Housing Resources Corp.

According to information from Catherine Couch of the corporation, the money can be used for energy-efficiency improvements by income-eligible single or multi-family households that meet income criteria. Households earning no more than 150 percent of federal poverty level, or who earn 60 percent of the state median income, are eligible for the program, which is primarily intended to help elderly or disabled people and families with children.

The most-current figures available, for 2006, showed that the previous grant had financed weatherization of 1,726 Kansas homes and replacement of 453 unsafe furnaces. The result was an average 21 percent reduction in heating bills, Couch said.

Applications for grant money can be made to Yvonne Johnson, manager of the Emporia ECKAN office at 616 Merchant St.

Thanks create. Too bad the reporters can't include that type of info in the article.

Some of the guidelines will be fluid. For instance, the poverty level is different for a family of one and a family of six. I am fairly certain that SRS would have the specific income levels.

The federal guidelines website has a convenient chart which graphs numbers of family or household members against income. A family of four, for example, is charted as $20,650. The income amount increases by $3,480 for each household member.
