The Emporia State baseball team completed its second straight four-game sweep on Saturday, taking down Missouri Western 6-5 and 14-8 in St. Joseph, Mo.
The first game didn’t come easy.
ESU led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh before running into trouble, as MWSU’s Adam Carolan came through with a two-run double to tie the score at 5 and put the potential game-winning run at second.
After an intentional walk, ESU’s Daniel Waggoner pitched his way out of the jam, striking out Blake Bussman before getting Tommy Bone to ground out to second.
Kellen Lane delivered an RBI single in the extra inning to put ESU on top, and Waggoner worked around a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth to secure the Hornets’ victory.
Lane led ESU’s bats, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Brian Majors added three hits and two runs, while Eric Shortell contributed two hits and two RBI.
In Game Two, ESU used a relentless offensive attack to pull away.
The Hornets scored four runs in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to turn a 3-all tie into a 14-5 advantage.
The biggest blow came in the fourth, when ESU third baseman Kevin Wempe blasted a grand slam.
Wempe finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Andy Anderson also went 3-for-3, while Shortell had two hits and three runs scored.
With the victories, ESU (21-3, 8-0 MIAA) extended its winning streak to 12 games.
