Leadership
Dylan Jacob, a 2007 graduate of Emporia High School, is a student at Central Christian College in McPherson. Jacob is a member of the Phi Beta Lambda Business Association and recently participated in a competition at the 57th State Leadership Conference in Wichita. He received five first-place awards in Internet Application Programming, Web Site Development, Networking Concepts, Computer Concepts and Cyber Security. He is the son of Jeff and Amy Jacob of Emporia. He is the grandson of Dottie Enserro of Emporia and Duane and Janet Jacob of Neosho Rapids.
Marine training
Andrew T. Birk of Emporia graduated from Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 21, 2007; Marine Combat Training in San Diego on Jan. 22, 2008; and Military Occupational Specialty at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama on March 6, 2008. Birk is the son of Chris and Leslie Birk of Emporia. He is the grandson of Earl and Sophie Everitt and Vernon and Beverly Birk of Gridley.
Ambassador
Erica Waechter of Emporia is one of 22 students selected as a Kansas State University College of Agriculture ambassador. She is a sophomore at KSU studying agronomy. The ambassadors work primarily with prospective students, alumni, industry leaders and college faculty and students. They also assist with various activities on and off the campus that promote the college.
Library exhibit
Melissa Glaser, a graduate of Emporia High School and graduate student in English and a Children’s and Adolescent Literature Community officer at KSU, is helping with the upcoming “Alphabet Soup” exhibit at the Beach Museum of Art. The exhibit, “Alphabet Soup: Work by Stephen Johnson, Jim Munce and Tony Fitzpatrick” is gathered art that uses letters from the alphabet. Most of the exhibit focuses on Johnson’s ‘Abstract Alphabet,’ described as “part children’s book and part lesson in 20th century artistic movements.” The show , which opens April 4 and continues through Aug. 3, coincides with the “first interdisciplinary conference on children’s literature at K-State on April 5 in the Student Union,” said the news release.
