The 23rd annual Optimist Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in Jones Park. Categories include 2 years old and younger, 3 to 4 years old, 5 to 6 years old, 7 to 9 years old and disabled. Admission is free. Organizers recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to allow time to walk from the parking area to the hunt.

Co-sponsors are the Flint Hills Optimist Club and Cable One. The rain date is March 29.

On the radio

KPOR radio station, at 90.4 on the FM dial, will broadcast programming involving Emporia on Saturday at 12:14 a.m., 6:44 a.m., 12:14 p.m., and 5:14 p.m.

Amtrak study

TOPEKA — Kansas transportation officials have asked Amtrak to study the possible expansion of rail service from Kansas City to Oklahoma City. Emporia is among cities that have expressed interest.

The rail line will look at connecting two existing routes — one that runs from Kansas City to Newton, the other from Fort Worth, Texas, to Oklahoma City. The study would be paid for by the Kansas Department of Transportation at a cost of $150,000 to $200,000. It would begin this summer and be completed in the fall of 2009.
