ESU Softball run-rules 2 opponents by combined score of 22-1

The Emporia State softball team picked up a pair of run-rule victories on the first day of the Missouri Western Crossover Tournament on Thursday, defeating Concordia-St. Paul, 9-1, and the University of Mary, 13-0.
In Game One, ESU led just 2-1 before scoring four in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Shelbe Hughes led the Hornets’ offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff hitter Jessie Wiard went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Aubree Brattin also added a pair of hits.
Brittany Norris picked up the win, allowing three hits and one run in five innings. She also struck out seven.
The Hornets had an easier time in the nightcap, scoring five in the fifth inning and seven in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Designated hitter Abby Smith went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Miranda Campbell added three hits, a homer and three RBI.
Jennifer Dace and Smith had the other home runs for ESU.
Samantha Sheeley was dominant in the circle, allowing three hits and no runs in her five innings while striking out five.
ESU (15-10) will play three games in the tournament today, starting with a 1 p.m. matchup against Minnesota-Mankato.
