Library honors

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

THE EMPORIA PUBLIC Library is pleased to congratulate two library board members and its Friends of the Library group for receiving local and state awards.

Jesse Solis was honored on Jan. 21 with the Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award here in Emporia. Jesse has served as a library trustee since 2005 and is active in many community activities. He brings his knowledge of the Hispanic and business communities to the Library’s outreach efforts.  Marshall (Jack) Havenhill, a board member since 2002, serves on the Executive Board of the North Central Kansas Library system and is the treasurer of the Kansas Library Trustees Association (KLTA). Jack received a Shining Star Certificate of Appreciation from the State Library of Kansas for his work to develop the Kansas Library Trustee Certification Program and the 2008 Trustee Training program. His extensive work with KLTA finances has been invaluable to KLTA’s strategic and financial planning. Jack has presented to the South East System membership on Strategic Planning, a topic he will also be working with in the Trustee Certification Program.

Ann Coulson, President of the Friends of the Emporia Public Library, will accept an award from Friends of Kansas Libraries (FoKL) on April 9 at the Kansas Library Conference in Wichita. Selected as an outstanding Friends group serving more than 10,000 people, our Friends group sponsored a special art competition and purchased art for the library, set new records for the two 2007 book sales, sponsored the annual Bookmark Design Contest, honored special library supporters with Super Friend awards and provided support for many library projects. Winners were selected on the basis of benefit to the library, creativeness and originality of projects and increased community awareness. The award includes a certificate, $100 in cash for the group and a one-year membership in the Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA).  We are pleased to work with these and other active library advocates in our effort to provide the best library services and resources possible.

Sue Blechl is director of the Emporia Public Library
