After 11 years of practicing urology in Emporia, Dr. John Kosko is picking up and moving to one of the coldest areas in the United States.
Kosko, who’s last day of practice in Emporia is March 31, is moving to the northern Minnesota town of Bemidji, where the average temperature for March is 25.9. Kosko will be joining a multi-specialty group in Bemidji, he said. The medical group has 65 doctors in the community. The practice is different, Kosko said, but the technology he will be working with will be comparable.
“I decided it was an opportunity that I shouldn’t pass up,” he said. “I’ll be doing urology in a different practice setting. I’ll be sad to leave here but I’m looking forward to starting new challenges.”
Kosko, who is originally from Ohio, said he has always loved the northern woods and frequently takes vacations in the area.
Kosko said he has enjoyed his time in Emporia.
Technology in the urology field has grown over the past 20 plus years, Kosko said. The latest is robotic assist technology. He said this technology is available in a couple of places in Kansas City, but it’s probably not something he’ll ever work with.
“The big change came in the 1980s,” he said, of the technology that allowed kidney stones to be broken up with lasers.
If you need your records
Patients of Kosko’s who need their medical records should contact the office before March 31 to obtain them, Kosko said. After March 31, the records will be available, but through another company and it probably will cost to get them.
