Optimists
The Flint Hills Optimist Club will have the annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. in Jones Park on Saturday, with the Easter Bunny scheduled to appear. In case of inclement weather, the hunt will be held March 29. It was announced the club has donated $200 to Camp Alexander and $100 each to the Emporia, Olpe and Northern Heights high schools for their after-prom parties. Mike Utech reported that the boys’ and girls’ teams were selected for the March 29 FHOC High School All-Star Basketball Classic and Rich Jaggard reported that preparations were made for the Classic Banquet on March 25 at the ESU Memorial Union. Members made plans to participate in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters “Rock and Bowl” event April 4, 5 and 6. Former president Bob Glover was named Optimist of the Quarter and the club was recognized as an Honor Club by the Kansas District of Optimist International. Recent speakers have included Heidi Goff, area manager for Head Start; Rodger Langemeier of Wish ‘N Spin; and city commissioner Kevin Nelson.
Sertoma
Recipients of the Sertoma Club scholarships for the 2007-08 year at Emporia State University are freshmen Clinton Prose and Yadira Gonzalez. Aaron Bura will be honored with the Sertoman-of-the-Year award at the evening dinner meeting on March 26. Members are planning the Ag Appreciation Dinner to be held June 14, with Mike Matson of the Kansas Farm Bureau as speaker. Anna Ryan, executive director of the Emporia Granada Theatre Alliance, was a recent speaker.
