Parade on, come rain or shine

Friday, March 14, 2008

If the luck o’ the Irish holds, rain won’t dampen the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and bagpipers will be dancing Saturday afternoon on the bar at the Town Royal, 405 Commercial St.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Emporia officially begin two days before the holiday, on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a parade up Commercial Street, from Fourth Avenue to 12th.

The parade will be held rain or shine, and the St. Patrick’s Day Committee is optimistic about the weather forecast.

“From the weather I’m hearing now, there’s a chance of rain in the morning, and it’s supposed to end by 1,” said Bev Durham, parade chairman. “We hope everyone has an umbrella and a raincoat ...”

The parade, with 40 entries, again will feature a bagpipe band sponsored by the Town Royal and Slead Farms of Lebo. The theme this year is “Show Us Your Green.”

The St. Patrick’s Day Committee will continue to accept donations for a drawing for a “Las Vegas Getaway” donated by Steve and Linda Corbin of the Town Royal and Mike Turnbull of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. The drawing to determine the winner will be done at 3 p.m. at the bar. Entrants need not be present to win.

Money collected from the drawing, as well as from sales of T-shirts and holiday memorabilia, will be added to proceeds from the committee’s fundraising auction this month for “Bikes for Kids.” The project will buy first bicycles for children whose families cannot afford to purchase them.

Names will be drawn for the bicycles until the committee runs out of money to buy bikes or children to award them to, sponsors said earlier. Local agencies that deal with children’s issues have been asked to provide names of children eligible for the bicycles.

Drawings for the winners will be held on April 1.

Other St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will be held during the weekend and on Monday in the area. The special events listed below are ones The Gazette was aware of at press time.

The Breckenridge restaurant in Americus will have a bull fry from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and will feature corned beef and cabbage on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Noose, formerly The Lariat, at 323 Commercial St., will give away hot dogs with sauerkraut as long as they last for its celebrations on Saturday and Monday. The bar will open at noon on Saturday, and also will have specials on “real” Irish coffee and pints of draft beer, according to co-owner S.C. Dixon.

Live music will be provided by the band, Co-Dependents, at the Wagon Wheel Grill and Bar, 2909 W. Ninth Ave.

Green beer domestic beer in schooners will be featured at Bamboozer’s, which will open at noon on Saturday, 7 hours earlier than its usual opening.

Natasha’s Billiards and Lounge, 627 Commercial St., will open early, at noon, for the parade. Special plans for the celebration were not yet available.
