Curtis Simons to be inducted into Hall of Fame

Friday, March 14, 2008

For all of his accomplishments in guiding the Emporia High School wrestling program to some of the best year’s in its history, former EHS head coach Curtis Simons will be officially recognized later this year as one of the best the state has seen.

Simons, who spent 11 years as the head coach at Emporia High, will be inducted into the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame in late October in a ceremony in Salina.

Simons’ list of career accomplishments and achievements is lengthy and certainly merits recognition.

He guided Emporia High to Class 6A State titles in 1995, 1996 and 2000, while the Spartans finished second as a team in 1997-99 and 2004. Simons’ teams won the Centennial League title all 11 years he was at the helm, with 68 Spartans taking individual league crowns.

He coached 15 individual State champions and another 11 second-place finishers, and all told had 77 out of 136 State qualifiers place at the State Tournament.

During his 11 years at EHS, his squads had a combined dual record of 101-11-1, a winning percentage of 91 percent. Before he came to Emporia, Simons coached the previous seven years at Hoisington High School and Hoisington Junior High School, collecting a 106-43-4 record there for a career dual record of 207-54-5.

Simons twice was named the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association 6A Coach of the Year (1995, 2000) and was a nominee for the National Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2004.

Simons, who now is the principal at Hartford High School, was a two-time Midwest Regional champion and National qualifier at Fort Hays State University as a student there, and in high school at Scott Community High School, he went 65-8 in his career and was a Class 4A State champion.
