Tyson to pay United Way

Tyson Foods will honor the company’s $52,000 pledge to the United Way of the Flint Hills, the company announced today.

Tyson workers donated $45,000 in 2007 and had pledged $52,000 in 2008. But that was before the company downsized the Emporia plant, eliminating about 1,700 jobs.

“In order to make up for the loss of pledge money, Tyson will give $20,000 this month to the United Way of the Flint Hills,” said Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson this morning. “If necessary, the company will make another payment later in the year to supplement the pledged donations of the 700 Team Members still employed at the plant.”

Added Mike Fiehler, manager of Tyson’s Emporia beef complex, “The agencies supported through the United Way play a key role in our community and some may be called upon to help families affected by the recent restructuring of our operations. We’re hopeful our financial commitment will enable United Way to continue its important efforts to address the critical needs of the people who live here.”

It’s a move that pleases Duane Dreiling, United Way executive director.

“These funds will help us ensure agencies have adequate funding to meet the needs of the community and especially those affected by the operations restructuring,” he said. “We look forward to continuing this positive relationship with Tyson in the future.”

After the restructuring, Tyson began a new beef processing operation here Feb. 20 that includes cold storage and shipping, specialty beef processing and ground beef processing.

The company did NOT make this pledge. Employees did. But the company did step forward to help the united way. Maybe they are not the great evil at 6th and Prairie. It is a tough time for Tyson Inc too. They do not have piles of money laying around. To heck with the shareholders.

Even if such a thing is true, $170,000 is like petty cash, even less. What are you trying to start, Usay?

"they had $170,000 at the home at one of the owners" What is this all about? Who are the "they" and "owners"? I missed something. UW money? Tyson money?
