It’s been a good year for area Girl Scouts, with more than 90 percent of the cookie selling goal met — and Girl Scouts still have until the end of March to sell cookies.
Ashley Wheeler and Emma Summey, of Emporia’s Troop 22, sat in front of Wal-Mart in Emporia Sunday afternoon selling Girl Scout cookies. Between Saturday and Sunday, more than 150 boxes were sold. The troop has sold more than 1,500 boxes of cookies.
Kitty Frank, community development manager at the Girl Scouts of the Heartland, said the goal for an 80 county area in Kansas is 1.2 million boxes.
“We’re very close to reaching that,” Frank said.
In the Flint Hills area, which encompasses Lyon, Osage, Coffee, Morris, Marion, Chase, Greenwood and half of Elk Counties, the goal is 100,000 boxes. They are 90 percent to that goal, Frank said.
“We plan on selling about another 10,000 boxes before the end of March for this area,” she said.
Girl Scout cookies still can be purchased several ways — at the Girl Scout Council, 1200 Burlingame Road, from a Girl Scout or at booth sales, which are set up in various locations around town.
So far, the Thin Mints are at the top of the best-seller list, Wheeler and Summey said. Frank said Thin Mints have taken 25 percent of the sales pie. Thin Mints are followed by Caramel Delights (21 percent); Peanut Butter Patties (16 percent); Peanut Butter Sandwich (13 percent); Lemonades (seven percent); Cinnaspins, Thanks a Lot and shortbread all have 6 percent.
