DeAndre Townsend had 16 points for ESU.
ESU's Spencer Allen hit two free throws to give ESU a 27-25 lead with 2.8 seconds left in the first half before Northwest's Mike Larsen stole back the momentum, banking in a three-quarters-court shot at the buzzer to put the Bearcats back on top, 28-27.
ESU had a chance to tie it down 52-49 with 39 seconds left, but Caleb Tegtmeier's 3-pointer missed, and NWMSU's Andy Peterson grabbed the rebound.
Northwest hit 6 of its final 8 free throws to seal the victory.
The Hornets, after making 7 of 11 3-pointers in the first half, hit just 4 of 22 long-range attempts in the second half.
