Gun threat to children, woman, sends police to Emporia home

Saturday, March 8, 2008

A criminal threat with a deadly weapon toward an 11-year-old and 2-year-old early Friday morning ended with no injuries.

According to a press release by Sgt. David DeVries, of the Emporia Police Department, officers responded around 2:12 a.m. Friday to a report of a man with a gun all in the 900 block of Quail Creek.

β€œA child inside the home had text messaged her brother that the stepfather was loading a gun and a domestic (incident) was pending,” DeVries said. β€œHe had made threats of his wife and children.”

Officers arrived at the home and a perimeter was set up.

The older child was still being reached via text messages and was able to get to a door and leave the home. Officers then entered the home, took Samphone Rathsavong, 40, into custody and detained him. The younger child was unharmed.

A shotgun was found with Rathsavong but was not in his hands at the time. Rathsavong was arrested and formal charges are pending.

Oh thank God that it ended with no one getting hurt! The child was able to send a text and that is what saved their lives! Wow! I sometimes disagree with children having cell phones, but this made me look at it differantly.
