Emporia State baseball downs Washburn, 8-3
Led by a strong effort by starter Brock Nehls, the No. 17 Emporia State baseball team took an 8-3 victory over Washburn on Thursday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The right-hander Nehls went seven innings for ESU, allowing three runs while striking out 12 and walking just one. Ty Reese pitched two scoreless innings in relief to preserve the Hornets’ lead.
The strong outings were a welcome sign for ESU, which had a team earned-run average nearing 9.00 entering Thursday’s contest.
ESU’s offense was led by Nick Wolfe, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Nick Carlson and Keith Hernandez both added two runs scored.
The Hornets scored their eight runs with the benefit of just six hits, as Washburn (1-3) walked nine batters.
ESU (7-2) will take on Minnesota-Duluth in a home doubleheader at noon Saturday.
