Pats on the back

Friday, March 7, 2008

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

ALEX JOHNSON, who found and saved the lives of six puppies left in a burlap sack beside a Dumpster at the Salvation Army thrift store.

- Becki Goodman, who will donate 10 inches of her 25-inch-long hair to Locks of Love. Goodman, a teacher at Emporia Middle School, will also donate another inch for every $50 raised for a mass hair-cutting benefit next week at the school. Proceeds from that event will go the Salvation Army’s emergency fund for the Tyson layoffs.

- Students from Emporia, Olpe and Northern Heights high schools, who decorated and sold cakes for the Bikes for Kids project and for the schools’ respective prom committees. Emporia High’s junior class made $375, while Olpe’s brought in $360. Northern Heights’ sophomore class made just under $400.

- Emporia Middle School students who will help with the playground improvements at Peter Pan Park. The students will work for two hours a day on May 1 and May 2 to fulfill the community service part of USD 253’s health curriculum.

- The Kiwanis Club of Emporia, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday when it holds its annual Pancake Day.

- Emporia State University basketball player Michelle Stueve, who was the unanimous choice of MIAA coaches as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
