County budget is tight

Friday, March 7, 2008

Lyon County’s budget for 2008 is the tightest the county has ever had, Lyon County commissioners were told Thursday morning during a financial report at this week’s action meeting.

County Controller Dan Slater told commissioners the county is going to have to do what is needed to hold expenses down, however, there are going to be times when that isn’t possible.

“These are very tight numbers and you’re going to see some negative numbers occasionally,” Slater said.

Slater was speaking in response to some comments made by Bob Agler, of A&M Consultants, who was talking about grades different departments in the county received for the month of January. The county uses a grading system to evaluate how a department is doing financially.

“When you look at it and there’s some Cs coming in and some Ds, that’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Slater said.

Agler told commissioners revenues are looking good so far in 2008. Revenues are up $132,000 above the budgeted amount in February. Jail revenues are continuing to stay up, Agler said.

On the flip side, Agler said the multi-year capitol improvement fund is $66,000 over budget. Slater said this is due to replacement of computers in the sheriff’s dispatch center and for the security system in the jail. Slater said some of the expenditures such as the new computer system were emergencies and therefore, unbudgeted.

“We have spent some money for undesignated capitol that we didn’t intend to spend,” Slater said.

Overtime is about 12 percent under February 2007’s figure, Agler said.

“I really kinda expected February to (not) be an attractive result,” Agler said. “But we’re under from last year.”

In other business:

F Commissioners approved a zoning application for a telecommunications tower near Olpe.

F An application to change the definition of urban access corridors in Lyon County will be heading back to the Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board after a motion to approve the text change was made but died for lack of second.

Maybe the county should have decided not to give the approximatley .20/hr (if that) to sheriff's officers, they could of saved the county valuable money. What a joke, what kind of organization gives their employees a meanless raise after several years without anything and ask them to continue to put their lives on the line. Lyon County is lucky any officers are left in that too-bit under administered dept. It's time to vote Eichorn and his boy Old out of office.

I agree, the Eichorn and Old show needs to go. Too much underhanded behind the back financial deals over there.

Consolidate police and SO dispatch centers. It would be much more beneficial from a financial standpoint as well as providing better services to the residents of this county.
