Talk of stem cells
Former state representative Mary Pilcher Cook of Shawnee will discuss “Stem Cells and Their Possibilities” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Burlington. Dessert and beverages will be provided. There is no charge. Cook is sponsored by the Coffey Countians for Life.
Cook, who is a candidate for the State Senate in District 10, represented District 18 in the Kansas House of Representatives from 2001-2002 and from 2003-2004, according to the news release.
Weather awareness
Severe Weather Awareness Week is scheduled March 10 through March 14.
The Emporia Police Department will test the outdoor warning system at 1:30 p.m. March 11 as a part of the state-wide tornado drill, and will continue testing weekly on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. through October.
All testing will be contingent on the weather.
The sirens will not be tested on days when there is a threat of severe weather.
