After earning two All-American awards in her storied career, Emporia State’s Michelle Stueve still had never been honored as her own conference’s best player.
That all changed on Monday, as the ESU senior was a unanimous choice by coaches as the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player.
This season, Stueve is second in the league in scoring (22 points per game), third in rebounding (8.4 rebounds per game) and first in both 3-pointers per game (3.56) and three-point accuracy (47.8 percent).
The Olpe native also set the MIAA’s all-time scoring record earlier this season. She is just one rebound away from becoming only the third player in conference history to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Currently, Stueve has 2,322 points and 999 rebounds for her career.
This is the third consecutive year that Stueve was named a unanimous All-MIAA first-team selection. She also won the conference’s Freshman of the Year award in 2005.
Stueve is the seventh MIAA MVP for ESU in the last 12 years, joining Kristie McClain (2003), Emily Bloss (2001), Tara Holloway (2000), Jurgita Kausaite (1999) and Aneta Kausaite (1997-98).
Cassondra Boston, Andrea Leiker and Ida Edwards also earned distinction on the All-MIAA teams.
Boston was a second-team selection, while Edwards and Leiker earned honorable mention.
Leiker also was selected to the MIAA’s All-Defensive Team.
Townsend named 1st-team All-MIAA
For the second straight year, Emporia State’s DeAndre Townsend was selected to the All-MIAA first team.
The 5-foot-9 guard leads the league in both scoring (19.5 points per game) and assists (6 assists per game).
The senior ranks 21st in the nation in assists and 32nd scoring, as is one of only two players to be in the top 35 in both categories.
Townsend also is second in free-throw percentage (81.9 percent).
No other Hornets were honored on the All-MIAA squads.
