The Emporia State indoor track and field team took two titles Friday on the opening day of the MIAA Championships in Joplin, Mo.
Jonel Rossbach started her weekend with a victory in the 5,000-meter run. Her time of 17:24.79 was nearly 5 seconds better than that of the second-place finisher, Missouri Southern’s Kimi Shank.
Josh Honeycutt took the other individual title, winning the triple jump on his final attempt.
His mark of 48 feet, 10.75 inches is the second best in school history and also was 7 inches better than Pittsburg State’s Kiara Jones, who was the favorite to win the event.
ESU also had the top mark in four events after the preliminary rounds.
Brooke Kent has the best time in both the 60-meter and 200-meter runs. Her time of 7.73 seconds in the 60-meter also was the second-fastest time in school history.
Jaclyn Sill added the top showing in the 600-yard dash with a time of 1:26.29. She has won the conference title in the event in the last two years.
On the men’s side, Kenton Lonberger ran a school record in the 200-meter run, clocking in at 21.83 seconds. That makes him the top seed heading into today’s finals.
Skyler Delmott added a fourth-place showing in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:13.86, while Damon Birk had a personal record in the weight throw (56 feet, 7.5 inches) to finish fifth.
Matt Koeling and Doug Marshall placed fifth and sixth respectively in the triple jump.
After four events, the ESU men are in fourth place out of eight teams with 19 points, while the ESU women are fifth out of seven teams with 10 points.
