New Strawn
The Coffey County Republican reported that the New Strawn City Council accepted an offer from a local businessman to purchase about 20 acres of land located in the northeast part of New Strawn.
Kenneth Burris met with the council during its Feb. 7 regular meeting expressing interest in developing the land into a retail-type area.
Waverly
The Coffey County Republican reported that Sarah Krueger, Lebo eighth-grader, won the Coffey County Spelling Bee last week. She outspelled 11 students and won on the word “beneath.” Sarah won in the 14th round.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that the Burlington USD 244 Board of Education approved a $5,000 recruitment/retention bonus for full-time speech language pathologists employed during the 2008-2009 school year. The motion passed 5-1.
Eureka
The Eureka Herald reported that Jordan Himes, of Eureka, took first place in the Greenwood County Spelling Bee. Himes spelled “exhibition,” giving her the title.
