The U-18 Emporia Energy softball team finished in second place with a 6-2 record at the ASA State Tournament in Wichita over the weekend.
The Energy started off with a 12-4 victory Friday night over the Topeka Rocking Jays. Then, after a 9-hour rain delay on Saturday, Emporia defeated the Great Bend Quicksilver, 5-4, before losing to the Chapman Rocks, 5-1, in the nightcap.
The Energy climbed its way up through the losers bracket on Sunday with four consecutive wins. Emporia defeated the Manhattan Lasers, 6-1, the Lawrence Phenix, 3-2, the Chapman Rocks in a rematch, 1-0, and the eventual State champion K-State Techno Cats, 4-0.
Because it was the Techno Cats’ first loss, the Energy had to play an if-necessary championship game and eventually lost, 9-4, in its fifth game of the day.
Leading the offense for the Energy was Brittney Dymnioski with two out-of-the-park home runs, while McKenzie Cinelli added one of her own. Lenae Wells caught every game for Emporia.
Amber Jones picked up all six victories in the circle for the Energy. Also pitching was Amy McAfee and Hannah Lynch.
The Energy will go on the road to Wellington next weekend before playing the Regional Championship Tournament in Kansas City.
The Energy is now 16-9 overall.
