Methodists see changes
First United Methodist Church in Emporia has said goodbye to an assistant pastor as parishioners prepare to welcome a new assistant.
The Rev. Claudia Bakely, assistant pastor for the past five years, is the new pastor for the Basehor United Methodist Church in northeast Kansas. Her last Sunday at the Emporia church was June 22.
In July, the Rev. Matt Powell will be arriving from McLouth United Methodist Church to become the new assistant pastor at First United.
Earlier this month, Kurt J. Cooper, Methodist campus minister at Emporia State University, was ordained to the diaconate during a service at Baker University in Baldwin City. Cooper, who has been serving in the campus ministry at Emporia State, holds a bachelor’s degree from Baker and a master of theology in Christian ethics from Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.
As a deacon, he is able to preach, conduct worship, perform marriage ceremonies and bury the dead.
