Lyon County commissioners will continue discussion during today’s meeting about the possibility of storing some BB guns and air rifles on county property at the Lyon County Extension Office.
Brian Rees, Lyon County Extension agent, spoke with commissioners during Wednesday’s study session. Rees said the Shooting Club had approached the Extension Office about the possibility of storing firearms and ammunition on county property. Lyon County owns the building the extension office is housed in. After further discussion, Rees said there would only be BB guns and air rifles and some archery equipment, not gun cartridges.
“I’m concerned with the powdered cartridges,” Commissioner Bob Davis said.
Rees assured Davis that type of ammunition wouldn’t be stored.
County Commission Vice-Chairman Marshall Miller said the county’s insurance company doesn’t have a problem with the storage of the items.
Rees said the larger issue may be public storage of equipment.
“We don’t have a problem with storing the equipment,” he said. “If you store that equipment, then what about the other clubs in the county that may want to have their equipment stored ... you start really looking at it and whose to say any of the other non-extension-affiliated entities wouldn’t want to use it as free storage?”
