Health center grants

The Flint Hills Community Health Center got another boost with more grants coming in from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

KDHE announced Tuesday the awarding of more than $6.2 million in primary care clinic and health center grants across the state. The community health center in Emporia received $345,000 for the primary care clinic; $40,000 for prescription assistance and $75,000 for the dental clinic.

“This grant demonstrates the value of partnership among state and local leaders, health care volunteers, foundations and the federal government for building toward a statewide system to assure access to primary and preventive services for every Kansan,” said KDHE Secretary Roderick Bremby.

In 2007, the grants supported medical, dental and mental health care services for more than 181,000 Kansans, according to a press release from the KDHE. Of those, 58.6 percent were uninsured patients and 20.8 percent were covered by Medicare.

Safety-seat check

If you’re unsure whether your child safety seat is installed correctly, this weekend you’ll have your chance to get it checked for free.

A child safety-seat inspection will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Staples, 2200 Industrial Road. In case of rain, the event will be at Longbine Auto Plaza, 3012 W. Highway 50.

Each child safety seat should be placed in the primary vehicle used to transport it. The child who rides in the seat should be brought along, too, so the seat can be fitted properly for the child.
