For the award recipients at Emporia Main Street’s annual meeting Monday evening, it was a night to celebrate excellence and achievements.
Special recognition was given for the Emporia Main Street Board of Directors outgoing board member; Emporia Main Street Business of the Year; Emporia Main Street Volunteer of the Year; and the Emporia Main Street Advocate. The outgoing board member was Casey Woods, who served on the board for nine years.
“(Casey) was just a really go-to volunteer type of person,” Main Street Director Kayla Oney said. “You ask him to do anything and he’s there.”
The Business of the Year award was given to The Sweet Granada.
Oney said the award is given to a business that meets several criteria including dedication to customer service, convenience of hours and whether the storefront is visually appealing.
The Advocate of the Year award was given to Julie Johnson. That award is given to an individual or business who has shown great support for Emporia Main Street in several areas Oney said.
The Volunteer of the Year award was given to Ron Thomas. This award is given to an individual who has shown commitment to volunteer service Oney said.
In other business, new officers were chosen. Deborah Huth will be president for 2008-09. Other officers are Rob Gilligan, vice-president; Mark McAnarney, secretary; and Becky Smith, treasurer.
Other board members include Mike Turnbull, Kristi Mohn, Shane Shivley, Ray Toso, Michael Black and Sue Blechl.
