Cyclist bails before crash

Young man witnesses accident

Monday, June 23, 2008

A young motorcyclist escaped serious injury about 9:30 p.m. Monday when his yellow and black 2008 Yamaha R6 slid under a Ford Expedition at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Chestnut Street.

Reid DeLong witnessed the accident from his vantage point in the drive-through lane at Braum's Ice Cream Store and Dairy Store, 1028 W. Sixth Ave.

"He bailed off," DeLong said.

DeLong said the cyclist drove north from a stop sign on the south side of Sixth Avenue when he apparently saw the SUV approaching and jumped from the bike, which caught under the SUV.

The motorcyclist received deep scrapes to his shoulder, elbow and side.

"He's got road rash," DeLong said.

The motorcyclist remained at the scene, talking with police as friends gathered. One crossed the street to retrieve pieces of the motorcycle, while others pulled it upright and wheeled it to a parking lot on the northwest corner of the intersection. Eventually it was loaded into the back of a pickup truck.

"It didn't feel good," the cyclist said as he prepared to leave the scene.

Other bystanders said the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

"He's lucky he just got a couple of scratches," bystander Dusty Nettrouer said.

More information about the accident will be published in Tuesday's Gazette.

Does anyone have any details on this one?

"the lady who got hit around 5pm Monday across the street from Waters True Value?"

It happened 4 hours before this guy. Why isn't it on here?

Doesn't say anything about how he was going about 50 MPH before the intersection, does it? I was sitting in my living room and heard him roar past, then crash. Maybe if he wasn't going so fast, he'd still have a bike. Hmmmm.

wow! Tallicamantw01 you should join the police force. They could really use someone with your abilities. Sitting inside your house and hearing 50 mph, that is a talent. You shouldn't be so bitter and let the police do their jobs. I think Kelly Davis and the rest of epd did a great job handling the wreck. LOOK TWICE MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE!!

Most people can get somewhat of a speed estimate by approach then retreat of a sound source. I know my bike insurance has steadily gone up with no claims from me. I support Motorcycle Safety Foundation training for ALL riders. Their challenge course for experienced riders is fun and informative. We all need a refresher now and then on little used skills like counter-steering and slippery ground control.
