Rains continue to delay harvest of Kansas’ wheat crop.

The Kansas Wheat Commission reports that there’s been 6 to 7 inches of rain in Anthony. Parts of Harper County have had hail and wind damage with a complete loss from Sharon to Attica. Test weights are coming in from 59 pounds to 62 pounds per bushel.

“The wheat stalks are still standing but the wheat heads are getting weak and starting to shatter,” a harvest report stated.

Test cutting also is occurring in the Santana area. Field cuts are coming in with moistures in the 13 to 15.7 percent range.

CRP critical feed use

CRP participants with certain vegetative covers may have their contracts modified to allow haying or grazing for Critical Feed Use, according to a press release from the Lyon/Chase FSA Office.

When haying, no more than 50 percent of each field may be hayed and no haying within 120 feet of streams and ponds. Grazing may be at 75 percent of NRCS recommended stocking rate on 100 percent of eligible acres or 100 percent of stocking rate on 75 percent of the eligible acres.

No haying or grazing will be allowed until after the nesting season (July 15). No payment reductions will be assessed but a $75 fee will be charged for modifications to contract and conservation plans. For more information contact the FSA office at 343-2812.
