DOUG MALEY, who continues to rehabilitate following brain trauma and apparent strokes suffered eight years ago following open-heart surgery. Maley suffers from impaired walking and speech but continues to look for rehab treatments that will help him improve, and he regularly works out at Emporia Fitness to stay in shape.

• Emporia State University professors Julius Cohen, Jon Sward and James Persinger, who presented the results of a study that measured the effectiveness of a self-tapping procedure used to reduce fear of dental treatment. Sward and Persinger presented the findings of the study at the Kansas School Counselors Association convention in Topeka.

• Those involved in organizing and presenting local festivals such as last weekend’s Madison Days and this weekend’s Wah-Shun-Gah Days in Council Grove. Events at these festivals give area residents a chance to have a little fun while enjoying the warm weather and give communities a sense of togetherness.

• Ronald Blanchard, Suzanne Ransleben, Kathleen Faye Engle, Penny Ferguson and David Lazerson, who will join other esteemed educators when they are inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame tonight at Albert Taylor Hall.

• Chris Brammer, who was promoted to clerk for the Lyon County District Court, and Jeanne Turner, who retired from that position, effective last Friday. Turner spent 27 years as the head clerk. Brammer previously served as head of the court’s traffic division.
