The Emporia A-16 Gold squad split its doubleheader at Burlington on Wednesday, losing the first game, 10-0, before recovering to win Game Two, 9-6.
“We’re making improvements,” Emporia coach Jerry Cook said. “You can’t always see it in our record, but we’re making improvements and getting better.”
Emporia struggled with the bats in Game One, mustering just three hits in a run-rule loss.
The Golds recovered in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first inning and coasting from there.
Jase Hubert started for Emporia, going four innings before giving way to Josh Lambert.
The reliever picked up the final three outs to secure the win.
Ryan Huth had two hits and two RBI to lead Emporia’s bats.
Cook also was pleased with his defense, as Dustin Lingenfelter and Lambert both made tough catches in the outfield to save runs.
“The second game was great,” Cook said. “We showed some emotion, and we were fired up.”
The Gold team’s next doubleheader will be at Manhattan on Saturday.
