10 graduate students receive awards

Ten Emporia State University graduate students will have some additional financial assistance driving their advanced studies, research and creative activities this fall. The students are recipients of Academic Achievement Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The students were nominated by their professors and were selected by a committee representing ESU’s Graduate Council.
This year’s Academic Achievement Award recipients, hometowns, and their area of graduate study include:
• Carly Chadick, Wichita — psychology and special education;
• Erin Christians, Derby — English;
• Courtney Culp, Kansas City, Mo. — social sciences;
• Joel Griffiths, Newton — MBA program;
• Stephanie Herbster, Topeka — mathematics, computer science, and economics;
• Brenda Hughes, Wellsville — MBA program;
• Ashley Long, East Troy, Wisc. — biological sciences;
• Chelsea Patton, Topeka — psychology and special education;
• Katherine Pownell, Newton — English; and
• Enilda Romero, Scarborough, Ont. — instructional design and technology.
Recipients of the AAA awards are required to pursue a worthwhile research project or perform a useful academic service under the direction of their major department. In addition to receiving a graduate assistantship in their major department, the students each receive an additional stipend of approximately $1,651.
