Whippoorwill anniversary
Today is the 30th anniversary of the capsizing of the showboat Whippoorwill on Pomona Lake. Strong winds accompanying a tornado blew the paddlewheel boat over as it was beginning an evening dinner and show cruise with about 60 people on board. Sixteen people died, including three Emporians, members of the faculty at Emporia State University’s School of Library and Information Management. It was the worst boating accident in Kansas history.
Four other Emporians were among the survivors.
The production scheduled for the cruise was “Dames at Sea.”
WEATHER
Slight chance of storms tonight, partly cloudy Wednesday with a high of 81.
