Tuesday

• The Emporia Arts Council is holding a jazz dance class for children ages 6 to 11 at 6 p.m. in the arts center, 618 Mechanic. The class costs $20. Call the arts council at 343-6473.

Wednesday

• The Emporia City Commission will hold its biweekly action meeting at 7 p.m. in the city commission/municipal court room in the Civic Auditorium. The commission will consider adopting its five-year capital improvement plan and an ordinance approving shooting ranges with a conditional-use permit.

• The Lyon County Commission will hold its weekly study session at 8 a.m. in the county commission chambers at the Lyon County Courthouse.

• The Emporia Farmers’ Market will hold its ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the back lot of the Trusler Business Center, 719 Commercial Street. The market bell will ring at 5 p.m. for shopping to begin.

• Christian pop band Sweetwater will perform in the latest Brown Bag concert in the Emporia Public Library’s courtyard at noon. Band members are Roy Mann, Melinda Flohr, Tom and Linda Forbes and Bill Brinkman.

Thursday

• The Flint Hills Catbackers will hold their dinner and auction beginning at 6 p.m. at Emporia Fitness, 2812 W. 12th Ave. For information, call 342-2348. A social begins at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30.

• The Emporia Municipal Band holds its latest summer concert at 8 p.m. at Fremont Park, Fourth and Union Streets.

• The Lyon County Commission will hold its weekly action meeting at 8 a.m. in the county commission chambers at the Lyon County Courthouse.

• Kids ages 6 to 11 can learn to create a bouquet of flowers at the Emporia Arts Council’s Food and Flowers class at 2 p.m. Fee is $17. Call the arts council at 343-6473 for more information.

Friday

• The National Teachers Hall of Fame will induct this year’s class of five educators at 7:30 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall on the campus of Emporia State University. The induction is open to the public.

• The Wah-Shun-Gah Days festival begins in Council Grove and runs through Sunday. Attractions include comedian Heywood Banks on Friday, a performance by a yo-yo spinning champion on Saturday and the annual Kaw Inter-tribal Pow Wow on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday

• The Emporia Farmers’ Market’s Murphy’s Menu Pie Contest begins at 7:45 a.m. Visitors to the market will vote on their favorite pie. The winner receives a bag of culinary prizes and will be mentioned in the next Home Cooking section of The Gazette.

• Basic photo editing will be the subject of Beginning Digital Imaging: Introduction to Adobe Photoshop beginning at 9 a.m. at Flint Hills Technical College. Advance registration is required. For more information, call 343-4600 or go to http://flinthills.augusoft.net.

• The Emporia Garden Tour runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour is sponsored by the Lyon County Extension Master Gardeners. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. For more information, call 341-3220.

• Garages in Americus will be loaded with cheap merchandise as the city hosts a number of garage sales.

Sunday

• The Emporia Aquatic Club is sponsoring a free community swim at the Jones Aquatic Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Information: 341-0127.
