Wednesday market opens

The Emporia Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau will have a ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Emporia Farmers Market at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street to celebrate the opening of the Wednesday Farmer’s Market for the 2008 season. Light snacks will be served after the ribbon cutting. The market features local growers, canners, crafters and bakers. The market, which opens at 8 a.m. Saturdays and 5 p.m. Wednesdays, will continue through October.

Murphy’s Menu Pie Cook-Off will be held at the market on Saturday. Bakers may bring their best pies to the kiosk between 7:45 and 8 a.m. On June 25, Murphy’s Menu BBQ Sauce Cook-Off will be held. Entries are to be brought to the kiosk between 4:45 and 5 p.m. For each contest, market visitors will sample entries and vote for favorites.

The winner of each contest will receive a bag of culinary prizes and be featured in the Home Cooking section of The Emporia Gazette.

Main Street chat

Emporia Main Street Director Kayla Oney will be the guest at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for an online chat on The Gazette’s Web site.

During the half-hour chat, Oney will answer questions about Main Street’s job of preservation of the city’s downtown and promotion of downtown business.

Questions may be submitted in advance or during the chat at www.emporiagazette.com.
