Girl Scout events

The Girls Scouts of Kansas Heartland-Emporia Region have summer activities for girls of all ages, according to a news release. For girls in grades 1 to 3, there will be “Christmas in July,” a sewing “Funshop” from 10 a.m. to noon on July 16. The registration fee is $5 with the deadline to register on July 2.

For girls in grades 4-6, there will be the “Magic of Chemistry - Fun with Polymers!” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 12 (bring your own lunch). The fee is $5; deadline to register is June 27. Also, for girls in grades 4-6, “Christmas in July” will be from 10 a.m. to noon July 17. Girls will learn “stitches and techniques to design a Christmas Star.” The fee is $5; registration is due by July 2.

“Paula’s Scrapbooking,” for girls in grades 5-12 will be from 9 a.m. to noon July 22. Participants are to bring photographs, newspaper items or “anything you want to keep for all time.” The fee is $5; deadline, July 15.

On July 20, there will be “Dad-Daughter Bowling” for all Girl Scouts, their dads, uncles, grandpas or adopted male relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. July 20. The fee is $8 each person; deadline July 14.

A swim party will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug 1. The cost is $2 each girl; deadline, July 28.

Seminary scholarship

Kathy Lynn Williams of Emporia, who attends St. Paul School of Theology, received a 2008-09 United Methodist Georgia Harkness Seminary Scholarship. The scholarships go to women who are preparing for ordination as elders in the United Methodist Church. Williams will visit Honduras in December with the other 10 scholarship recipients as “part of a continued program of global women’s leadership development begun last year,” said the news release. She is a pastoral assistant at Grace United Methodist Church in Emporia.

Debate at nationals

Emporia High School debaters Alex Bonnet, Chase Miller, Drew Bonnet and Kathryn Scherich competed in the national high school debate championship held at Appleton, Wis., over the Memorial Day weekend. Seniors Alex Bonnet and Chase Miller placed 17th out of 136 teams from across the nation. This is the third top 20 finish for the EHS debate team. Sophomores Scherich and Drew Bonnet were the youngest entries.

On dean’s list

Hugo Escabar of Emporia, a senior at Bethany College at Lindsborg, was named to the spring 2008 Dean’s Honor Roll. To be recognized, a student must be full-time with a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4-point scale.

Methodist award

Emporian Judith Kewley received the Torch Award on June 5 during the United Methodist Church’s eastern district annual conference in Baldwin City.

The award was presented “in recognition of outstanding service to children and youth.” Kewley was honored for her 30 years of leadership involvement in the Boy Scouts of America packs and troops sponsored through Grace United Methodist Church, and for her work at Sojadi District level.
